On April 30th, the Carmel Greyhounds welcomed over 30 former players back to the Eric Clark Activity Center for the 2025 Alumni Night — an evening that culminated in a commanding three-set sweep of ninth-ranked Bishop Chatard. The victory marked the team’s third consecutive win in what has been a standout inaugural IHSAA season. This special night celebrated not only the current squad’s achievements but also the legacy of those who built the program. Among the honored guests was program founder Stacy Hicks, whose vision laid the foundation for what has become one of Indiana’s most successful volleyball programs — boasting 18 regional titles and three state championships. Hicks was joined by Jon Harmon, Carmel’s all-time winningest head coach, who led the Greyhounds to state titles in 2011, 2012, and 2017 during his tenure from 2008 to 2017. Also present was Stephen Van Hoorde, a former player under both Hicks and Harmon, who later took the helm from 2018 to 2020. Rounding out the group was assistant coach Steven Zerfas, who provided crucial stability to the program during three different head coaching transitions and served as head coach in 2023. The evening's celebration transitioned into action on the court as the Greyhounds battled through a shaky start. Down 11-18 in the first set, Carmel staged an impressive comeback to win 25-22, setting the tone for the rest of the match. From that point on, the Greyhounds never looked back. Senior Will Lloyd and sophomore Thomas Kuehl each tallied nine kills to lead the offensive charge in a dominant 25-17 second set. Sophomore Jack Kovac contributed eight kills, while senior middle blocker Chase Thorpe was a model of efficiency, hitting .667 on the night. Carmel continued their dominance in the third set, at one point holding an 11-point lead. The team’s aggressive serving, led by sophomore Lorenzo Orlando and freshman Eli Philistin-Lynch, kept Bishop Chatard on their heels. Junior setter Shep Spidel added 38 assists, continuing a stellar season that currently ranks him third in the state for total assists. The Greyhounds now await their first-ever IHSAA Sectional Draw, set to take place Sunday at 6:00 p.m., hosted by IHSAAtv and Greg Rakestraw. Currently ranked in the state’s top ten, Carmel will enter the Fishers Sectional, which begins play on Wednesday, May 15.
